Audiobook: Beastly Things, By Donna Leon (read by Andrew Sachs)

News from The Independent: Early one spring morning, a misshapen body – hugely barrel-chested and with a neck as thick as his head – is dragged from a canal. The man has been stabbed in the back. The pathologist identifies his condition as Madelung’s disease, but no one can identify the man himself. Donna Leon’s hero, Commissario Guido Brunetti, is one of the most attractive serial detectives of contemporary fiction. A good man, he is only too aware of the possibilities of corruption all around him. Generally, his office is concerned with such comparatively petty offences as illegal clam-dredging in the Venetian lagoon: murders are uncommon. But when he discovers that the murdered man was a vet, who was very unhappy about the work he had recently undertaken at a huge slaughterhouse … Read entire article »

Awesome audiobook: Stars read Etgar Keret’s stories

News from USA TODAY: I have Miranda July to thank for my appreciation of Etgar Keret. A few years ago, July told me she really enjoyed Keret’s short stories, particularly his 2006 collection, The Nimrod Flipout. After reading a couple pieces by the acclaimed Israeli writer, I became a big fan. Last month Keret’s latest short-story collection, Suddenly, A Knock on the Door, was released to positive reviews. And although I’m quite fond of the printed word, I must say this one might be best enjoyed as an audiobook. Next week the audio version of Suddenly arrives, (Macmillan, $ 24.99), and it’s an all-star affair, with stories read by July, How I Met Your Mother‘s Josh Radnor, Stanley Tucci, Michael Chabon, Mark Duplass, Dave Eggers, Jonathan Safran Foer and many other notables. Audiobook: The Woman Who Went to Bed for a Year, By Sue Townsend (read by …

News from The Independent: When Eva and Brian’s precocious twins, Brian Junior and Brianna, depart for university, their mother starts clearing up. She finds a dirty soup spoon casually left on the arm of a chair she had spent two years embroidering. She flips, throws the remains of the tomato soup all over the chair and takes to her bed. And there she stays. Before long, that chair and her bed are all that remain in her empty white room. Brian is outraged to be cast domestically adrift, although, as Eva soon discovers, he has been conducting a lengthy affair with a sturdy fellow astronomer named Titania Noble-Forester. (Brian is, however, no Lothario. “In the football league of lovers,” muses Titania, “he is Accrington Stanley.” When he takes two Viagra, she thinks … Read entire article »
