Germany slashes audiobook VAT, pushes for e-books cut

News from The Bookseller: 01.05.14 | Lisa Campbell The German government has cut VAT on audiobooks to 7%, and the rate on e-books might soon follow. The decision was made by the German coalition government’s executive board on Tuesday (29th April) and means audiobook sellers will be able to charge less for the product now the VAT rate has been slashed from its previous 19%. The German ministry of culture is also pushing for the same 7% VAT rate to apply to e-books in the country at European Union level. Print books currently attract a 7% VAT in Germany, so the decision, if made, would make e-books and print books equal as far as VAT is concerned. Use Your Library Card to Borrow eBooks, Audio Books Online

News from Patch.com: It’s 2013 and in this futuristic-sounding year, it only makes sense that you can now borrow a book from the library without leaving your house. Memorial Hall Library is promoting an online service called OverDrive, a site that hosts an online lending system for Merrimack Valley libraries. Andover residents with library cards can visit the Merrimack Valley OverDrive site to borrow from a collection of a large variety of ebooks and audio books. Library patrons can borrow up to 5 titles at a time and lending periods vary between titles. But, for those library debtors, the system will not allow anyone to borrow ebooks or audio books with an outstanding library debt over $ 10.
