Audio books to help blind students of Class VIII

News from Times of India: MYSORE: City-based Shubhodaya Charitable Trust is leaving no stone unturned to make sure that visually challenged schoolchildren face no difficulty in academics. The trust had come out with audio books for visually challenged students appearing for SSLC. Having seen good response, the trust developed audio books for Class VIII too. From 2012-13, Class VIII students will have a new syllabus, and the audio books are expected to help them in a big way. G Balaji, trust’s managing trustee and visually challenged political science professor, said that they faced problems while preparing for exams. “I don’t want students to face similar problems,” he added. Qualcomm, Project Ray Collaborate on a Mobile Phone for the Blind

News from eWeek: Qualcomm and Project Ray have introduced a mobile phone that allows the visually impaired to access audio-book content from a nonprofit library in Israel. Qualcomm and Project Ray, a company that develops technology for the blind, have introduced the Ray, a mobile touch-screen smartphone that syncs with audio content as part of a trial with Israel’s Central Library for the Blind, Visually Impaired and Handicapped. The Project Ray device combines smartphone technology along with that of devices such as audio-book readers, raised Braille labels and special barcode scanners. The phone is built from an off-the-shelf Android handset. The companies announced the mobile phone Oct. 22. Qualcomm will fund the project through its Wireless Reach program, which delivers wireless technology to underserved communities. Qualcomm is also providing project management assistance. Students have created the audio version of ‘Dhruv-tara’, a popular book on Tendulkar penned by Sanjay Dudhane, which would be released during a special ceremony to be held at the Deccan Gymkhana Club on October 15. News from The Republic: PHILADELPHIA — A plan to restructure statewide library services for the blind and disabled is being criticized by librarians and patrons who say the ill-conceived overhaul will limit book availability and hinder service for thousands of patrons in eastern Pennsylvania. State officials contend the realignment scheduled to take effect Monday will save money by consolidating functions now spread between two facilities at opposite ends of the state. But librarians in Philadelphia say the plan won’t cost less and has already cut off service to its patrons for nearly a week. “All we’ve been asking is that they please stop the process and let us all come to the table and create an effective plan,” said Keri Wilkins, administrator of Philadelphia’s Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
