Exclusive Titles Are Helping the Audiobook Business Boom

The audiobook has been undergoing a serious makeover. What used to be an inconvenient niche industry for the gung-ho (a six-CD jewel-case monstrosity, or worse, a giant box of cassettes!) has performed death-defying backflips around its wilting print counterparts in recent years. A private-equity-backed company has acquired Old Saybrook audiobook publisher Tantor Media, the two announced.

The buyer is Maryland’s Recorded Books, which bills itself as the largest independent audiobook publisher in the country. The deal grows Recorded Books’ catalog of book titles to more than 22,000.

Financial details of the all-cash transaction, which closed Dec. 31, were not disclosed.

Tantor was founded in California in 2000 before moving to Old Saybrook.

Carter Morse & Mathias served as Tantor’s financial advisor. Robinson & Cole was its legal advisor and CohnReznick was its accountant.
