Audio books: Two wildly different, mysterious tales follow visions

News from The Providence Journal: A pair of New York City men who see visions are at the center of these two wildly different novels. “The Book of Jonah,” by Joshua Max Feldman, read by David Pittu. Unabridged, 14 hours. Macmillan Audio, $ 39.99. The biblical Jonah fled from God, seeking to evade becoming a prophet by taking a ship in the opposite direction from God’s commanded destination. But the joke was on Jonah: God sent a storm, the ship’s sailors heaved Jonah overboard to appease the angered deity, and the reluctant oracle served time in the belly of a huge fish. Jonah Jacobstein, like his biblical namesake, is just an average guy — all right, an ethically challenged thirtysomething Wall Street lawyer juggling two girlfriends — when he begins to see visions. … Read entire article »

Amazon vs Hachette is nothing: just WAIT for the audiobook wars!

News from Boing Boing: In my latest Locus column, Audible, Comixology, Amazon, and Doctorow’s First Law, I unpick the technological forces at work in the fight between Amazon and Hachette, one of the “big five” publishers, whose books have not been normally available through Amazon for months now, as the publisher and the bookseller go to war over the terms on which Amazon will sell books in the future. The publishing world is, by and large, rooting for Hachette, but hasn’t paid much attention to the ways in which Hachette made itself especially vulnerable to Amazon in this fight: by insisting that all its books be sold with Amazon’s DRM, it has permanently locked all its customers into Amazon’s ecosystem, and if Hachette tries to convince them to start buying ebooks … Read entire article »

AUDIO BOOK REVIEW: ‘The Fever’ by Megan Abbott

News from Sarasota Herald-Tribune: Baffling. Disturbing. Infuriating. All words to describe what’s happening at Dryden High in Megan Abbott’s taut new novel, “The Fever.” Also words to describe the book itself, perhaps most particularly the listening experience. The book turns on the Nash family, science teacher Tom, shy but good-looking hockey player Eli and 16-year-old Deenie. One day at school, Deenie’s best friend Lise, a formerly plump and awkward child who has blossomed almost overnight into a stunning sex kitten with slender body and large breasts, suffers a seizure in class. Within minutes, video footage is circulating through social media, and the next day another girl succumbs, and then another. Soon the ER is overflowing with girls “spinning like tops” and their panic-stricken parents; the school board’s got a problem on its hands … Read entire article »
