Harry Potter Movies & Audio Book: JK Rowling Develops Stage Plays, Prequel …

News from Latin Post: First Posted: Dec 21, 2013 10:00 AM EST (Photo : Joe Dykes/Flickr) After conquering books and movies, well-loved character Harry Potter is spanning the stage, says reports. The world wide hit series revolving around the young wizard will take magic and wizardry to the UK in the form of stage plays. The play, set to open within two years, will not be a continuation of the 8-chapter series. Instead, the play will be a prequel to ‘Harry Potter’. USA Today quotes J.K. Rowling’s Friday-released statement describing the production team’s goal to create a play that shall “explore the previously untold story of Harry’s early years as an orphan and outcast.” The script for the stage play will be courtesy of another writer and not the creator of ‘Harry Potter.’ Although it has … Read entire article »

AUDIO BOOK REVIEW: ‘TheGoldfinch’ worthy of multiple readings

News from Sarasota Herald-Tribune: I am not a re-reader of books; in fact, that I even keep them at all after I’ve finished is a bit of a mystery to me. So for me to tear through Donna Tartt’s latest novel, “The Goldfinch,” in print once, and now a second time — plus listening to it on audio — gives you some idea of how infatuated I have become with it. I’d read Tartt’s earlier works, including “The Secret History,” and enjoyed them, but I was not so enamored as to repeat them. But there’s something about “The Goldfinch,” and its story of Theodore Decker and a small painting of a goldfinch by 17th-century Dutch painter Carel Fabritius, that has thoroughly enthralled me. The novel is huge, 784 pages in print, 32 and a half … Read entire article »

Audio-book readers help students who struggle

News from Arizona Republic: By Bariah Steiner Special for The Republic | azcentral.com Tue Dec 17, 2013 9:27 AM Mike Albert started recording audio books for students who struggle to read about three years ago. The Peoria Unified School District occupational therapist was able to record about two or three a year, until he turned to volunteers. About 50 or 60 volunteers have recorded more than 350 books in the past two years — and he’s always looking for more. Norma Moore and Michael Harding recently attended one of Albert’s one-hour training to get started as volunteers. “I have time on my hands,’” said Moore, a Valley retiree. “They said they needed somebody and I was available.” Harding, a retired pastor in Phoenix, similarly sought ways to help. “When you’re retired you want to find things to … Read entire article »

At Your Library: Audio books prove irresistible

News from Fayetteville Observer: Related By Catherine Gibson I still remember my unenthusiastic response to the initial buzz and excitement surrounding audio books. I couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to listen to a book. An avid reader since childhood, and unquestionably traditional, I’ve always enjoyed curling up with a good read. Books were designed to be nestled and cradled, with each page turned in anticipation of the next line, turn or twist in the story. I stubbornly resisted new book formats until a children’s literature class at East Carolina included an audio book critique as a requirement. During enrollment in library school, the Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center proved to be an invaluable resource, as I was able to locate many fiction items on my required reading lists. It was to … Read entire article »
