E-Book Use Up 77 Percent This Year In Tennessee

News from NewsChannel5.com: FILE Photo NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Downloads in the state’s Regional E-book and Audio Download System (READS) increased 77 percent in the past year. The free program offers thousands of digital e-books and audio books to patrons of public libraries belonging to the Tennessee Regional Library System. Digital titles can be downloaded to a personal computer or a variety of portable devices. Books downloaded across the state in the past year was almost 702,000 — up 77 percent from a year ago. News from News Virginian: Bringing Joys of a Great Book to Blind and Physically Disabled Readers             For blind and physically disabled readers, getting hold of the latest bestseller, be it mystery or current events, isn’t as simple as pulling a book off the nearest library or bookstore shelf. Books have to be made accessible. At the forefront of providing such materials as Braille and audio books is the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), part of the Library of Congress. Locally, the NLS is represented by the Talking Book Center, located at the Staunton Public Library. Kewanee, Atkinson libraries get grants to help impaired patrons

News from Kewanee Star Courier: Public libraries in Kewanee and Atkinson are among 40 Illinois libraries and community college learning resource centers that will receive equipment to enhance Internet access for patrons with visual or physical impairments by allowing them to download audio books.“Many Illinois public libraries provide services for patrons who have visual or physical limitations that make it difficult to read regular printed materials,” Secretary of State Jesse White said. “I am pleased to be able to provide this equipment that will enable those library users to download audio books through the Internet.”The equipment consists of at least 12 Kindle 4 E-readers, five digital cartridges and five USB cables.
