Review: ‘The Witness’ by Nora Roberts

News from USA TODAY: By Joyce Lamb, USA TODAY Genre: Romantic suspense I don’t have much time to read these days, but I do have time to listen to audio books in the car. Recently, I took a long road trip from Washington, D.C., to Chicago and had lots of time to listen. So I chose Nora Roberts’ 200th published novel, The Witness. (I say 200th published novel, because you just know she’s written at least 40 after The Witness that haven’t been published yet.) I was not disappointed. What I love most about this book is that we get to meet the heroine when she’s a teenager — and spend a good chunk of time with her. But let me back up and fill you in on the plot details. Elizabeth Fitch is 16 … Read entire article »

‘Fifty Shades’ reading is not always so discreet

News from Central Florida News 13: (AP) — Ashley Cummings had a little mishap while engrossed in “Fifty Shades of Grey” on her way to the San Francisco subway. Head down, clutching her iPad, she ran smack into a fellow pedestrian. When the downloaded culprit became clear, her victim went from grumpy to new friend. It’s not the only time the 24-year-old publicist’s e-edition was something less than private. Across the country in Connecticut, her 13-year-old brother wondered why she was reading “those sex books” when they also showed up on his iPad, since the two share an account. “I laughed it off,” Cummings said, “and proceeded to lock him out!” Much has been made of the erotic trilogy’s success thanks to discreet e-books, but whether downloaded or between paper covers, it has made … Read entire article »

Librarians decry ‘Shades of Grey’ but don’t stand in its way

News from Pittsburgh Post Gazette: May 27, 2012 12:26 am Share with others: By Maria Sciullo / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette As a group, librarians generally agree that if popular titles entice people to read, perhaps they’ll move on to even better books. If that book happens to be “Fifty Shades of Grey,” well, there’s nowhere to go, but up, is there? “I don’t think reading rubbish is, in and of itself, bad,” said Cynthia Richey, director of the Mt. Lebanon Public Library. “There can be a defense of rubbish — it’s escapism, fluffy. But there is well-written escapism and there is awful escapism.” Fifty Shades of laughter You don’t have to know much about “Fifty Shades of Grey” to appreciate the viral videos making the rounds and making fun of the books. Best among them is the Funny or Die parody … Read entire article »

On the importance of audiobook performers

News from Boing Boing: By Xeni Jardin at 4:15 pm Friday, May 25 In the New York Times, John Schwartz writes about audiobook performers, who may be “little known outside of the community of devoted listeners,” but serve an important role. “If somebody’s going to spend 10 or 20 hours in my ears, turning me into a local jogging spectacle, I’d better enjoy the experience,” writes Schwartz. “That means, of course, picking the right books to listen to. It also means listening to the right reader.” Share this post >>> Read the full article Related News: … Read entire article »

Creating a Custom iTunes Audiobook From Multiple MP3s

News from About – News & Issues: You can use a dedicated software program such as an audio editor to merge multiple audio files into one audiobook, but why do that when you can just use iTunes instead? If you’ve already got iTunes installed on your machine, then adding more space-hogging software to your computer’s hard drive might be unnecessary if you just want the basics. Rather than wasting time (and possibly money) on third-party software, you might find that the facility in iTunes to combine multiple MP3 files into one audiobook could be the perfect solution. Using this often overlooked feature enables you to create customized audiobooks which are similar (but not identical) to the ones that come from the iTunes Store — normally in the M4b audio format. It’s also a … Read entire article »

In a Digital Age, Braille Is Still Important

News from Wired News: Eleven-year-old Hank must hold a book or screen two inches from his eyes in order to read. Photo by Holly Miller. My eight-year-old son, Steven, has oculocutaneous albinism, a condition in which a lack of pigment in the eyes and skin causes varying degrees of poor vision, light sensitivity, and vulnerability to sunburn. My son’s vision is only mildly affected, but even so, he must wear dark glasses every time he sets foot out-of-doors. My friend Holly Miller’s eleven-year-old son, Hank, also has albinism, and in Hank’s case, the effects on his vision are severe. He is legally blind. By the time Hank entered second grade, Holly and her husband Jeff were aware that reading the printed word was an exhausting and difficult experience for their son. They realized … Read entire article »
