A time for reflection

News from Fiji Times: I was listening to an audio book which went like this. (An audio book is a recording of a text being read.) All over the world radars recorded the flight of a foreign object hurtling its way to Earth. The US was the first to locate it but scientists were skeptical that it could be a cloud formation or a malfunction in the radar. But then China and Russia also spotted the object and via radio they asked each other to verify the sighting. Then other countries of the world started calling in and it was confirmed that an unidentified flying object was on its way to earth. The world was in chaos. The object, a silvery shaped flying machine landed in a desert in the United States of America. The … Read entire article »

HBS prof Noam Wasserman talks about his new book, Founder’s Dilemmas [Audio]

News from Boston.com: By Scott Kirsner, Globe Columnist Harvard Business School professor Noam Wasserman is one of the writers and teachers who best captures the high stakes decisions that entrepreneurs face every day. His new book, out this month, is called “The Founder’s Dilemmas: Anticipating and Avoiding the Pitfalls That Can Sink a Startup.” He teaches the “Founders Dilemma” course at HBS (it was so popular that it had a wait-list of 170 students last year), and maintains a blog called Founder Frustrations. The book reads like a catalog of all of the choices that can either sink a start-up, or help it build momentum — choices around how to divide ownership among the founding team, who should serve on the board, and whether to take money from “friends and family” or professional investors. … Read entire article »

Libraries learning new tech tricks

News from Shreveport Times: Shreveport librarian Mary Anne Coppersmith sees the future, and there’s barely a book in it. “I think we are on the cusp of seeing libraries become, essentially, not buildings,” she said. “While I kind of rue the day that I see fewer and fewer books, that is kind of inevitable. We see a lot of publishers now publishing solely for the e-book format.” About two-thirds of public libraries across the United States offer e-books, and about a fourth of public libraries are considering investing in preloaded e-readers for checkout. E-books remain a small percentage of all library transactions but are the fastest-growing checkout segment, according to the American Library Association. About half the speakers at the Louisiana Library Association conference in Shreveport last week touched on digital topics: “Tweet-A-Librarian”, “Cyberchatter … Read entire article »

Recording library brings texts to visually impaired

News from Odessa American: Tall black bookshelves line the wood-paneled walls of a small building off of West Cuthbert Avenue. On the shelves sit rows of audio books, books and dictionaries. Above, the ceiling is lined with photocopies of book and magazine covers, each mounted onto a colored piece of paper with a name type-written below. A long row of cabinets house an assortment of throat-soothing teas and remedies, and in a tiny nook, computer monitors, towers and broadcasting equipment, are neatly arranged; their hum a testament that the Recording Library of West Texas’ Radio Station is streaming. Four years ago, the radio station was just a dream for Trish Speight, executive director at the recording library. At that time, the Midland-based recording library had just debuted its Telephone Reader, a phone … Read entire article »
